Aldon Smith Begins Treatment; Timetable For Return To 49ers Unknown

Is outside receiver help answer for 49ers?

Corey Lemonier: The rookie, third-round pick likely would be used strictly as a pass rusher. He hasn’t had any snaps on defense, but 24 on special teams. He had two sacks in the exhibition season. “There’s adversity. There’s an opportunity to stare it in the face and whip it,” Harbaugh said. Smith had no sacks Sunday against the Colts.

San Francisco 49ers: What You Need to Know Heading into Week 4

Anquan Boldin was a great acquisition, but he’s not a true No. 1 receiver. Kyle Williams , the nominal No. 2 receiver, has 87 yards this season. The rest of the 49ers wideouts have one catch for six yards combined. As we mentioned on our Week 3 recap podcast , this is a group that just can’t appear to get open. Defense no longer a difference-maker The Chronicle notes that the 49ers have given up more rushing yards in consecutive games than any Niners team since Dennis Erickson’s 2-14 squad in 2004. The 49ers miss Williams.

49ers notes: Aldon Smith checks into rehab

“RB Frank Gore was angry at Jim Harbaugh at the end of the game. For good reason. He had only 4 touches in the second half.” “Just for clarity, RB Frank Gore had choice words for Jim Harbaugh near the end of the game, as Gore was heading out to the field.” In the game, Gore had 11 carries for 82 yards to go along with two receptions for 21 yards. His season stats don’t show much more than that as he’s only totaled 41 carries for 142 yards and one touchdown. The past two games, both losses for San Francisco, the 49ers have been outscored 56-10, and that is just an even bigger problem. Should this trend continued, the 49ers are going to have a lot more anger coming from more than just Frank Gore.

He certainly looked the part, leading this team to a Super Bowl and flaunting a skill set that was enough to send Alex Smith packing for Kansas City . Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports After blowing up the box score in Week 1, roaring past Aaron Rodgers and the Packers , Kap has since endured a bit of a statistical regression. Yet, despite the recent dip in his performance, his talent hasnt diminished, nor has the staffs belief in his ability to succeed. So, to pinpoint where the problem lies Apart from not being utilized properly by offensive coordinator Greg Roman, the 49ers quarterback has been overly fearful of making a mistake, which has led to hesitation and general indecisiveness on his part. As a dual threat with inherently more options, this becomes an even bigger problem. He has more to think over, with data receptors in his brain firing and telling him to do all different sorts of things. At times, he is running scared or overly fidgety in the pocket, often bailing on the play with his legs before it has a chance to develop. And when he is out in the open, and there is room to run, he hasnt asserted himself for fear of getting hit or wanting to prove that he can win with his arm. Overall, the killer instinct hasnt been there. The difference in 2013 is that Kaepernick is not playing to win; he is trying not to lose.

What’s wrong with the San Francisco 49ers?

That indefinite leave of absence officially began on Monday when the 49ers placed Smith on the team’s reserve/non-football injury list. As previously reported by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, Smith Colin Kaepernick Jersey will head to a rehab facility for counseling and inpatient rehabilitation. “I am taking a leave of absence to address my health,” Smith said in a statement. “I am sorry that I have affected my team, my family and the organization. I will do everything in my power to handle this situation the best way possible. I appreciate the support of the 49ers and our fans.” General manager Trent Baalke also released a statement, “Aldon Smith is taking a leave of absence to address a personal matter,” Baalke said. “The 49ers organization both respects and supports Aldon’s decision and commends him for taking responsibility for his actions. The long-term well-being of our players is paramount and we will stand by Aldon as he works toward addressing this issue. Due to the private nature of the matter, we will have no further comment.” York has already confirmed that Smith will miss the 49ers Week 4 game on Thursday against St.

49ers put Smith on non-football injury list

I’m sure Jim Harbaugh has high hopes for his prodigy, but Kaepernick seemed overwhelmed and antsy in the last two losses. In these first three games, the 49ers are throwing the ball over 31 times a game. Last season, the 49ers threw the ball a shade over 27 times a game. That’s an increase by over four attempts. In these first three games, the 49ers are averaging a shade under 26 rushing attempts on the ground. Last season, the 49ers averaged nearly 31 rushing attempts on the ground. Do you see the gap? The 49ers are built to run the ball, but it seems this offense is fixated on proving that they can sling the ball with the best of them. While many would salivate at thought of having a passing offense similar to the Packers or New Orleans Saints , the 49ers are more dangerous when they have a more balanced approach. The 49ers have been anything but balanced to start this season. According to Kevin Lynch , Frank Gore was angry at Jim Harbaugh at the end of the 49ers 27-7 loss to the Colts. Should we be surprised, especially since this was still a one-possession game in the fourth quarter? Stopping the Run Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports The 49ers are ranked No. 29 against the run thus far in the season. No.

Frank Gore: 49ers running back has some choice words for coach Jim Harbaugh

Injuries Harbaugh said linebacker Patrick Willis (groin) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (knee) had MRIs Monday, and both are unlikely to play against the Rams. If Asomugha’s injury is serious, cornerback Eric Wright likely would be activated at the earliest possible point, which is before the team’s Week 7 game at Tennessee. Davis was listed as a limited participant after Monday’s walk-through. The 49ers filed a rare Monday injury report because this week’s game is Thursday. Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 49ers place Aldon Smith on Reserve/NFI; team, player release statements By David Fucillo SBNation.com The San Francisco 49ers have officially placed Aldon Smith on the Reserve/NFI (non-football injury) list. Smith reportedly departed for an in-patient rehab facility earlier today. The length of his absence is unknown at this point. The 49ers will make a subsequent roster move at some point in the coming days. Considering the team is playing this Thursday, I imagine it could happen today or first thing tomorrow. Trent Baalke and Aldon Smith both released statements on the matter.

Gordon is a talented receiver who is reportedly on the trading block. The 49ers have a big hole at the position and a surplus of draft picks. So, is a deal possible? Well, yes, anything in the NFL is possible. But I would say it isn’t likely.

“I am sorry that I have affected my team, my family and the organization. I will do everything in my power to handle this situation the best way possible. I appreciate the support of the 49ers and our fans.” An NFL spokesman said there is no minimum or maximum time Smith can be on the non-injury list. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Smith is expected to be away from the team about a month. The 49ers will fly to London after playing at Tennessee on Oct. 20, then have their bye week after playing the Jaguars. An NFLPA source said the union is working with Smith so that he gets the help he needs.

Wells Fargo To Lay Off 1,800 More From Mortgage Unit

Holiday hiring typically ramps up next month. Targets hiring strategy follows an announcement by Kohls Corp., which said Thursday that it plans to hire about 53,000 seasonal workers for the holiday season. Thats slightly more than last year, according to Kristen Cunningham, a Kohls spokeswoman. Coming off a slower-than-expected back-to-school season, analysts and stores are bracing for a tough holiday shopping period, which accounts for as much as 40 percent of stores annual revenues. Thats because while jobs are easier to get and the housing recovery is gaining momentum, the improvements have not been strong enough to sustain higher levels of spending for most shoppers.

Many lenders also now require higher down payments. The supply of available homes remains tight, the Realtors group said. There were 2.25 million homes for sale last month, down 6 percent from a year earlier. Rising prices could encourage developers to build more homes. Last month, builders broke ground on the most single-family homes since February and sought the most permits to build those homes in more than five years. Homebuilder confidence remained at its highest level in nearly eight years in September, according to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders.

To tear his ACL in two different legs, to lose his mother to [kidney disease], to face the injuries he’s faced as a pro — he just stays so positive and works so hard. We train together in the offseason, and he goes twice a day. He’s just what you’d expect from an All-Pro.” Gore is one of the game’s most complete backs, a threat as a runner and a receiver and unflinching as a protector. His football IQ is among the highest on the team, which is a testament to not only him but also position coach Tom Rathman, who got him to see the game as a quarterback does. That was invaluable, because it allowed Gore to recognize the stress points in the defense and to see where the holes and crevices would be before the snap. Not that he needed the advantage. His vision and balance already make him a monster to bring down. He also runs low behind his pads and has the power and burst to break tackles or slip through small openings.

He rushed for just four yards on six carries. Thats 0.7 yards per carry. Thats not efficient footballfantasy or reality. Granted, Seattle boasted the fourth best defense in the NFL last year in yards surrendered. Gore wont face a stop unit that was ranked higher in 2013. However, he still only rushed for 44 yards on 2.1 yards a pop against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 (and their defense was just ranked 11th). He was teaching at the high school and she at the elementary school on the same campus. One day, in the spring of 2002, Rod Sturdivant, the football coach at the time, told Chris that the state was poised to take Ernest’s children from him. Their mother walked out years earlier and Patrick, at 17, was in some ways his younger siblings’ primary caregiver. “Rod said they didn’t know anyone in town who could take all four of them and he asked, ‘Do you know anybody?’ ” Chris recalls. “In a roundabout way, he was asking us if we could take them.” Sturdivant says he wasn’t really asking that.

Willis looks forward to more hand strength

(Story continues below) Credit: Patrick Willis/Facebook Several users reminded Willis that gopher snakes eat mice and gophers. “U inhumane niner,” one wrote. “Why did U kill him?” another asked. Of course some fans came to the All-Pro’s defense, too, pointing out that snakes are scary to some people and can be misidentified. (And who among us hasn’t used a mouse trap now and then?) As of Monday evening, Willis had not answered his detractors but he did write with the photos, “Never a dull moment. I had an intruder in my house welcome to the hills……. Got em.” UPDATE: PETA emailed the following statement to The Huffington Post: “PETA thinks that a beloved, 240-pound linebacker can find a more humane way to remove a nonvenomous snake from his homeand he certainly doesn’t need to brag about it online.

Justin Smith’s nonstop motor could pay dividends against a quarterback such as Wilson, who creates what Fangio termed a “second play” once the scripted one breaks down. The Seahawks’ offensive style certainly differs from the Green Bay Packers’ pass-oriented attack that the 49ers defeated in Sunday’s season opener. Look for the 49ers to play more of their base defense of three linemen, four linebackers. That means nose tackle Ian Williams will see the most action of his neophyte career, with Justin Smith as a trusty wingman. Williams, who estimated he played about four snaps at nose tackle in the opener, learned quickly in camp what it’s like to play next to Smith. “He’s a beast out there,” Williams said. “He just wrecked shop. That’s what he does.” That’s what the 49ers couldn’t do last season in Seattle.

Patrick Willis keeps the faith

Those “things” that Patrick Willis referred to would make even the most hardened child psychologist marvel at his resolve. As a child, Patrick spent so much time caring for Ernicka and his younger brothers Orey and Detris — long after Ernest vanished for the night — that Ernicka sends him Father’s Day cards. According to Patrick, Ernest often abused drugs so frequently that his children could only shake their heads when he advised them to avoid such destructive behavior. There’s also the night that Ernest returned home drunk and lined his children up military-style, just so he could give them a stern lecture. When Detris started to doze off, Ernest battered him with a fierce four-punch combination that dropped his youngest son to the floor. Patrick Willis was always too big to suffer such physical abuse, but he still felt his own hurt. When he was 13, he spent an entire summer working an $8-per-hour job for a logging company, all so he could save enough money to buy a pair of Air Jordans. But little by little, Ernest kept asking for loans — supposedly to pay bills — that Patrick knew were supporting his father’s drug habit.

49ers Opponent Q&a: Seattle Seahawks Examiner Chris Cluff

Seahawks’ Lynch has been thorn in 49ers’ side

=== CG: What is your prediction and expectations for this game on Sunday Night? CC: I expect special teams and turnovers to decide this game. Both teams will run the ball and get some plays from their dynamic quarterbacks. But points are likely to be at a premium and the team that creates great field position on special teams and with turnovers will win. That is what the Hawks did last year when Richard Sherman returned a blocked field goal 90 yards for a TD and then picked off Kaepernick in the end zone.

So who’ll be special-teams hero this time in 49ers-Seahawks matchup

We have a philosophy that special teams takes precedence over offense and defense, because it gives you a huge advantage Osgood said. With the parity in our league for offense and defense, special teams is an ace in the pocket for us. That importance is emphasized every game and not just against the Seahawks, said Spillman, adding: Were doing what we can do individually to make our unit grow and shine. Here are the special-teams highlights from the 49ers and Seahawks past meetings: Sept. 9, 2011: 49ers win 33-17, at Candlestick Ted Ginn Jr. scores fourth-quarter touchdowns on a 102-yard kickoff return and a 55-yard punt return to blow open a 19-17 game. David Akers made four field goals and the 49ers scored 26 of 33 points off special teams. Dec. 24, 2011: 49ers win 19-17, at Seattle David Akers fourth field goal puts the 49ers ahead for good, and it came on a drive that started with a 15-yard penalty against the Seahawks Michael Robinson for his hit on 49ers kickoff returner Kyle Williams.

49ers vs. Seahawks: Anquan Boldin, Richard Sherman and the slot

I just see the way they jaw during the game at coach Harbaugh. It’s not good. It’s not good. I definitely hope it settles down.” Sherman had the last word against Harbaugh in December. And he had a similarly satisfying performance in his only meeting against Boldin. On Nov. 13, 2011, Boldin had two catches for 22 yards on nine targets in Baltimore’s 22-17 loss at Seattle. Against Sherman, then a rookie, Boldin had one catch for 17 yards on six targets, according to Pro Football Focus. Who will win their next meeting Sunday night?

49ers vs. Seahawks: Vernon Davis a player to watch in Seattle

“The No. 1 thing for us is to play physical.” Linebacker Patrick Willis overheard Ventrone’s statement and responded: “That’s why I’m a fan of yours.” Ventrone, a seventh-year veteran who joined the 49ers in June, is responsible for patrolling the middle of the field on all four kicking and punting units. He most notably is in the backfield as punter Andy Lee’s personal protector. “Special teams in general, every play is high intensity, every play is a sprint and full-speed collision,” said Ventrone, who made his NFL debut with the New England Patriots in 2007 and spent the past four seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Ventrone was one of 10 players assigned only to special-teams duty in the 49ers’ 34-28 season-opening win over the Green Bay Packers. The others: Tramaine Brock, Anthony Dixon, Craig Dahl, Dan Skuta, Nick Moody, Corey Lemonier and the three specialists — Lee, kicker Phil Dawson and rookie long snapper Kevin McDermott. Moody sustained a broken hand that’s put him on short-term injured reserve, and he’s been replaced by Kassim Osgood, an 11th-year veteran whose special-teams prowess has sent him to three Pro Bowls. “We have a philosophy that special teams takes precedence over offense and defense, because it gives you a huge advantage,” Osgood said.

Two angry men: Avril likely to face 49ers, Browner in doubt

Of course, there is reason to believe that Davis will have a better time out on Sunday. The biggest argument in his favor is the fact that he was utilized so poorly last season. Delanie Walker ran a lot of his routes and the 49ers kept Aldon Smith Jersey Davis in the block an awful lot. Chancellor covered him well, to be sure, but Davis will be much more active in this game. With the injury to Michael Crabtree , we saw Boldin step up in Week 1, but it was Davis who was Kaepernick’s target once they got in the red zone.

Not so fast, my friends. Late last night, Eric Branch wrote something up that took a look at some interesting numbers as they relate to Boldin and Sherman . Branch broke down some Pro Football Focus numbers that show us Boldin holds a distinct level of comfort playing as a slot receiver, while Richard Sherman rarely finds himself covering the slot. As Branch pointed out in his article , Sherman has had some solid success against Boldin in their previous 2011 matchup. Boldin will likely find himself matching up with Sherman at some point, but how much will we see Boldin move around the field on Sunday? Branch’s PFF breakdown of last Sunday indicated he saw quite a bit of work all over the field. It only makes sense that we would see more of it this weekend. Of course, when Sherman does get his chances against Boldin, that leaves the door open for another receiver to try and take advantage of the off-setting matchup.

49ers OL Alex Boone wants to punch Clay Matthews in the face

No, Boone wants to, per CSN Bay Area , “punch him in the face.” “Probably punch him in the face, Boone said when asked what kind of fine he would give Matthews. “I don’t want his money.” Alrighty then. Either Boone really, really dislikes Matthews — a distinct possibility — or maybe he just wants a quid-pro-quo style punishment. After all, Matthews delivered a few shots to the head of Niners offensive tackle Joe Staley . Those punches, however, didn’t impress Jim Harbaugh very much at all . “I looked at it with my own eyes I could see two punches thrown to Joe’s head and well, one punch and one open slap,” Harbaugh said. “If you’re going to go to the face, come with some knuckles, you know? Not an open slap.” Matthews didn’t have any interest in continuing the banter but did point out that he’s “not dirty,” he’s “awesome.” “I’m an awesome player,” Matthews said.
